Posted by: Dogcat250 - 08-20-2019, 08:10 AM - Forum: Applications - No Replies

ATLANTA - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is praising the way the NBA has handled Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterlings racist comments. Goodell says Tuesday at the NFL owners spring meeting that his NBA counterpart, Adam Silver, was "being decisive, made the right statements and is doing the right things." Silver banned Sterling for life and fined him $2.5 million. NBA team owners will meet June 3, when they could force Sterling to sell the team he has owned since 1981. Three-quarters of the other 29 owners must vote to sustain the NBAs charge against Sterling to force him to sell. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a one-year contract. The worlds 10 best players have been whittled down to four so it is time to remember why Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis deserve their places in the Premier League Darts play-offs, which take place at The O2 on Thursday, live on Sky Sports. Michael van GerwenIt seems a long time ago that Van Gerwen started the season with a 4-7 defeat to James Wade in Leeds and perhaps therein lies the secret to defeating the mighty Dutchman. Check out MVGs only loss of the season so far... Back-to-back wins over fellow semi-finalists Anderson and Lewis, in Newcastle and Dublin respectively, were followed by a 7-1 thrashing of Michael Smith that yielded a 123 average, the highest in televised history. He stormed to the top of the league with a 7-2 win against Peter Wright in Exeter that sparked debate about whether he is already the greatest player in the history of darts. A top-of-the-table clash against Taylor in Glasgow saw Van Gerwen relinquish a 5-1 lead to draw 6-6. Michael van Gerwen missed three winning darts against Phil Taylor He made it three draws in a row after Robert Thornton and Raymond van Barneveld caused him to wobble in Liverpool and Cardiff, handing top spot to Taylor. He drew with Anderson then beat Lewis to solidify his play-off push before a 7-1 win against Wade put him top of the league. Even missing a nine-darter with his final arrow could not prevent Van Gerwen picking up maximum points against Van Barneveld in Manchester. Michael van Gerwen almost pulled off a nine-darter against Raymond van Barneveld Van Gerwen finished the regular season in No 1 spot on leg-difference after besting Taylor 7-5 in his home country of the Netherlands.Phil TaylorA thumping 2-7 loss on the opening night to Van Barneveld was not what the doctor ordered, but Taylor rebounded with wins against Wade in Newcastle and Anderson in Dublin. The 16-time world champion proved he meant business with a whitewash over Thornton in the sixth week.Taylor brilliantly recovered from 5-1 down to Van Gerwen in Glasgow to snatch a draw, then was typically ruthless as he eliminated Michael Smith from the tournament with a 7-5 win on Judgement Night. Phil Taylor eliminated Michael Smith from the tournament He then dispatched Anderson 7-3 in Sheffield before extending his lead at the top of the table to five points with a 7-5 victory over long-time rival Van Barneveld in Belfast. The winning leg as Phil Taylor trumpped Barney A 7-4 loss to Wright never caused a major blip and Taylor responded with a 7-2 thrashing over fellow semi-finalist Lewis before losing to Van Gerwen in Rotterdam, resulting in a second-placed finish.dddddddddddd This 7-2 win against Robert Thornton guaranteed Phil Taylor a play-off spot Gary AndersonAndersons Premier League title defence began bizarrely as he was ruled out of the opening night due to illness, meaning he debuted a week late with a 7-3 loss to Van Gerwen in Newcastle before losing 7-4 to Taylor in Dublin. Gary Anderson suffered an early loss to MVG The Flying Scotsman finally started putting points on the board before a bumper night in Glasgow, spurred on by his compatriots, resulted in two wins over Lewis and Wright. He even picked up a point despite oddly losing count against Wade in Cardiff as the play-offs began to present themselves. A second loss of the season to Taylor was followed by a thrilling 6-6 draw with Van Gerwen in Belfast. Watch the moment Gary Anderson got his numbers horribly wrong Needing to scrap to stay ahead of the chasing pack, Anderson edged past Van Barneveld before drawing with Wade to confirm his inclusion. A defeat on the final day to Lewis did nothing to damage Andersons third-place finish.Adrian LewisThe Stoke thrower started with back-to-back wins against Smith and Dave Chisnall, who would eventually be eliminated on Judgement Night, but ran out of ideas in a third-week loss to Van Gerwen. A sensational final leg between Adrian Lewis and James Wade Further defeats to Taylor, Wright and Anderson forced Lewis to scramble around mid-table but he responded with a much-needed win against Van Barneveld in Liverpool. He eventually struck the most eye-catching moment of the season with a nine-darter against Wade in Belfast en route to a 7-5 win that put him in the drivers seat for fourth-place. Watch Adrian Lewis hit a nine-darter A final night 7-2 win against Anderson confirmed his play-off spot - the result is the only time that Lewis has beaten any of his top four rivals so far this season.Watch the Premier League Darts play-offs from The O2 Arena on Thursday at 7pm, Sky Sports 2 HD.   La Liga game and could even afford to miss a penalty as
Posted by: Dogcat250 - 08-20-2019, 07:56 AM - Forum: Applications - No Replies

Barcelona produced another awe-inspiring display as they crushed lowly Getafe 6-0 in La Liga on Saturday afternoon to extend their unbeaten run to 37 games. Lionel Messi scored, set up three for the first time in a La Liga game and could even afford to miss a penalty as Luis Enriques men opened up an 11-point lead over nearest rivals Atletico Madrid in the title race with just nine games remaining, Real a further four points behind their city neighbours.Neymar struck twice, while Munir El Haddadi, Arda Turan and an own goal from Juan Rodriguez completed the rout as the reigning European champions warmed up nicely for the visit of Arsenal in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday, where they hold a 2-0 first-leg advantage. There was bad blood between the two clubs following the fixture at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez when Barca players coated the away dressing room with red paint on Halloween night, but it was Getafe who endured a nightmare opening 45 minutes.Juan Rodriguez turned home Jordi Albas left-foot cross for an unfortunate eighth-minute own goal to open up the floodgates.Lionel Messi then saw his spot-kick saved two minutes later after Neymar was bundled over in the box. Goalkeeper Vicente Guaita dived to his left to deny him. It was Barcelonas eighth miss from the penalty spot in the league this season. Messi supplied a hat-trick of assists However, that didnt deter the hosts as they swarmed forward in numbers and soon added a second through Munir after 20 minutes.Andres Iniestas defence-splitting pass found Messi, who teed up the 20-year-old striker for an easy header.Neymar then joined in the party just after the half-hour mark with a cool side-foot finish into the far corner from another Messi assist. Neymar bagged a brace in Barca rout The five-time World Player of the Year quickly made up for his penalty miss with a fabulous left-foot curling drive from the edge of the area four minutes before the break. And six minutes after the interval, Messi found space to slide a delicious pass through the eye of a needle for Neymar, who had time to take a touch before firing home his 20th La Liga goal of the season. They added a sixth just before the hour mark as Arda Turan scoring for second time in three matches with an unorthodox bicycle kick at the back post and Catalan giants then shut up shop for the remainder of the game. Messi collects the ball from the Getafe net after another Barcelona goal Victory was the hosts 13th straight win in the league, while the visitors are plummeting down the table with eight defeats in their last nine games now - leaving them hovering dangerously just over the drop zone.Watch Barcelonas trip to Villarreal on Sunday, March 20 on Sky Sports 3 HD from 2.55pm Starling Marte Pirates Jersey .com) - The Minnesota Twins made it official on Wednesday, announcing the signing of outfielder Torii Hunter to a one-year contract. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Fernando Rodney was good for another dozen pitches and the Seattle Mariners were good for a sweep. Rodney, working for the fourth straight day, earned his 21st save in 23 chances as the Mariners defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Sunday for a three-game sweep. Rodney, who had thrown 46 pitches in the previous three days, got saves in all three games at Kansas City. He last got into four consecutive games on May 27-30, 2013, for Tampa Bay. "It was no problem," Rodney said. "I said I feel ready. I got warmed up and felt good, felt loose. Thats why Im a reliever." "Sometimes early in the season you have a little problem with getting loose. When the weather warms up it helps get me a little more loose," he said. Rodney dispatched the Royals on 12 pitches, giving up a two-out single to pinch-hitter Mike Moustakas before striking out Pedro Ciriaco to preserve the one-run lead. "Its simple," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said on summoning Rodney once again. "I had a talk with him and he felt good. Hes worked very, very efficiently, and he was very efficient today as well. He has not thrown a lot of pitches. Hes definitely off tomorrow. He asked me if he could go to the Dominican, but I told him no." Rookie Roenis Elias pitched neatly into the seventh inning and Mike Zunino homered for the Mariners, who have won 18 of their past 26 road games. After winning 10 straight to move into first place in the AL Central, the Royals have dropped four in a row, three of them by 2-1 scores. "Were playing fine, but just an offensive down turn a little bit," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "You go through the ups and downs. A four-game losing streak right when you had put together a nice 10-game winning streak, its tough." Elias (7-5), a 25-year-old left-hander from Cuba, limited the Royals to one run and five singles over 6 2-3 innings. He struck out five, walked two and improved to 4-1 in June. "Everything was working," Elias said through a translator. Zunino hit his ninth home run, tops among AL catchers.dddddddddddd He connected off Yordano Ventura (5-6) leading off the seventh to break a 1-all tie. "Even though things arent going our way right now, I think were playing really good," Ventura said with teammate Bruce Chen acting as interpreter. Zunino led off the fifth with a double and scored on Willie Bloomquists two-out double. "We stepped up to the challenge and were able take three from them," Bloomquist said. "It shows what were able to do when we play well. Those guys are a very, very good baseball team. Granted, a bounce here or there and it could have come out differently." Ventura (5-6) had won his previous three starts. "He hung a breaking pretty good (to Zunino)," Yost said. "Outside of that, he pitched a great ball game. Anytime you go seven innings and give up two runs you give your team a chance to win a game thats a great job." The Royals scored their run in the second, which Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez opened with singles. Justin Maxwells sacrifice fly brought home Gordon. Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar left in the seventh with a bruised left shin. He was hit in the second by a pitch. X-rays were negative. The Mariners won a challenge in the seventh when Ciriaco was ruled safe at first for a bunt single. After a reliever that took over 3 minutes, the call was overturned and Ciriaco was out. NOTES: Royals 3B Danny Valencia, who missed 19 games with a muscle strain in his left hand, was activated from the disabled list. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. The Royals optioned RHP Louis Coleman to Triple-A Omaha as they opted to go with a 12-man staff. ... Mariners ace RHP Felix Hernandez, who starts Monday at home against Boston, is 4-1 with a 1.33 ERA in his past seven starts. The lone loss was 1-0 on June 18 at Texas when he allowed three hits, walked none and struck out 10. ... Seattle starters have allowed one run or less in nine of their past 10 games for a 1.50 ERA in that stretch. ' ' '

State opened its season with a 45-14 rout over Weber State
Posted by: Dogcat250 - 08-20-2019, 07:47 AM - Forum: Applications - No Replies

TEMPE, Ariz. -- D.J. Foster ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns, Jaelen Strong had 10 catches for 146 yards, and No. 19 Arizona State opened its season with a 45-14 rout over Weber State on Thursday night. The Sun Devils young defence was sharp in its debut, harassing Weber State quarterback Billy Green and stuffing the Wildcats running game before the starters came out. Arizona States quick-hitting offence overcame a slow start, marching over the Wildcats for 570 total yards. Taylor Kelly threw for 238 yards on 18-of-27 passing, helping the Sun Devils build a 31-0 lead before sitting out the second half. Foster had a pair of short touchdown runs and reeled off a 57-yarder to open the second half in his first game as Arizona States featured back. Zach Smith ran for 128 yards for the Wildcats, including a late 60-yard touchdown in Jay Hills first game as Weber States coach. Arizona States biggest questions entering coach Todd Grahams third season were on the defensive side of the ball. The Sun Devils lost two-time Pac-12 player of the year Will Sutton and linebacker Carl Bradford to the NFL. They had two returning starters, a bunch of underclassmen on the two-deep roster and six players who started their first college game Thursday night. The young guys got off to a jittery start when freshman tackle Tashon Smallwood jumped offside on the first play from scrimmage. They dominated the rest of the half, limiting Green to short throws underneath in his first career start while holding the Wildcats to 119 yards. Even when they screwed up, the Sun Devils made up for it, stuffing Weber State on a goal-line stand after missing numerous tackles on Smiths 39-yard run. That was the nice surprise for the Sun Devils. The not-so-nice one was start by their offence. Arizona State racked up yards and points the past two seasons, and many of the playmakers are back this season. Instead of racing away from Weber State, the Sun Devils sort of stumbled out of the gate, punting on their first possession and settling for a field goal on their second. Once Arizona State got rolling, so did the expected rout. Kelly showed off his solid connection with Strong, hitting the big wideout for all 10 of his catches in the first half. Gary Chambers caught an 8-yard touchdown pass for his first college reception and Foster appeared comfortable in his new carry-the-load role, scoring on touchdown runs of 1 and 3 yards. Kalen Ballage added a 1-yarder of his own -- also his first career TD -- late in the first half. Foster ended his night with a bumping, spinning 57-yard touchdown run on Arizona States first possession of the second half, putting the Sun Devils up 38-0. Greg Gaines Jersey .ca. FIFPro, the international soccer players union, had pressed FIFA to avoid the earliest kickoffs in the hottest and most humid weather.ATLANTA -- Kirk Hinrich made all the right moves for the Chicago Bulls in the final minute of the game. Not so much for Jeff Teague and the Atlanta Hawks. Hinrich buried six big free throws down the stretch and Teague had a couple of costly turnovers as the Bulls held on for a 107-103 victory at Atlanta on Tuesday night. Mike Dunleavy scored 22 points for the Bulls, who have won six of seven. Joakim Noah had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Carlos Boozer finished with 17 points and 11 boards. Dunleavy also had eight rebounds and four assists. He was covered in ice bags as he sat slumped at his locker after playing all but nine seconds in the game. "I appreciate (coach Tom Thibodeau) giving me that nine-second breather at the end of the half," Dunleavy said with a laugh. "That made a big difference." The Bulls won after trailing by 14 points in the first quarter. "They put us in a hole; we fought out of it," Dunleavy said. "We just had to battle the whole game." Since Jan. 1, Chicago is 12-1 when holding its opponent under 90 points. No other team in the league has kept as many opponents under 90 in that span. Teague had 26 points for the short-handed Hawks, who have lost nine of 10. Shelvin Mack scored 17. The Bulls led most of the second half but never pushed the advantage to double figures. "I think they really wanted that game today," Noah said of the Hawks. "We really wanted that game, too. It wasnt pretty at times. Im just happy we were able to come out with the win." DeMarre Carrolls fast-break basket gave Atlanta a 100-99 lead, but Dunleavy answered with a layup. With 1:03 remaining, Carroll sank a 3-pointer to give Atlanta a 103-101 lead. With 43.2 seconds remaining, officials reviewed and confirmed a questionable foul called on Carroll on Hinrichs 3-point attempt. Hinrich made the three free throws to put Chicago in front again. Noahs steal from Teague got the ball back for the Bulls with 20 seconds remaining. Atlantas Kyle Korver stole the inbounds pass, giving the Hawks a chance to take the lead, but Teague stepped ouut of bounds behind the basket.dddddddddddd Hinrich then made two free throws. Noah stripped Mike Scott of the ball on Atlantas next possession, setting up another foul shot by Hinrich. Coach Mike Budenholzer and the Hawks argued that Noah fouled Scott. "Do I think he was fouled?" Budenholzer asked after the game. "I just looked at it, and yes I do." Scott said Noah hit his arm but added "Cant do nothing about it now." Budenholzer also protested Carrolls foul on Hinrich but said after watching the replay he agreed with that call. Hawks All-Star forward Paul Millsap missed his second straight game with a right knee contusion and also will be held out on Thursday at Boston. The Hawks also were without centres Pero Antic (stress fracture, right ankle) and Gustavo Ayon (right shoulder), who had filled in following Al Horfords season-ending torn pectoral muscle. Budenholzer said morale isnt a problem. "I thought our group competed at a very high level for 48 minutes tonight," Budenholzer said. "Thats what were looking for, and thats what is most important to us." Korver hit 3-pointers on Atlantas first two possessions, extending his NBA record to 125 straight games with a 3. Korver added a third trey a couple minutes later, and his strong start seemed to spark the Hawks, who jumped to a 26-12 lead. Chicago closed the deficit with a 13-2 run in the final minutes of the opening period and start of the second quarter. The Bulls led 54-51 at halftime. Mack sank a short jumper with about 2 seconds remaining in the third period. D.J. Augustin, who had 10 points, then banked in a half-court shot for Chicago, lifting the Bulls to an 80-75 lead heading to the final period. NOTES: Glenn Frey of the Eagles, who played at Philips Arena on Monday night, had a second-row seat near midcourt. ... NBA Hall of Famer Julius Erving had a front-row seat and tipped his cap when called out by the P.A. announcer and cheered by fans. ... Bulls guard Jimmy Butler missed his second straight game with bruised ribs. ... Korver had 16 points and Carroll had 13. ' ' '

ew Quebec City arena or not, the NHL is not

BOSTON - Commissioner Gary Bettman says new Quebec City arena or not, the NHL is not looking at expansion right now. He made the comment at a media availability Saturday prior to Game 2 of the Boston-Montreal playoff series when a Quebec reporter said there is sentiment in Quebec that the NHL looks more favourably on Seattle than Quebec City when it comes to future expansion. And Quebec City is building a new arena while Seattle isnt, the reporter noted. "Were not considering expansion right now," Bettman replied. "We have not engaged in (an) expansion process." "If we reach a point in time where we decide we want to go through a formal expansion process, then well evaluate all potential applicants and opportunities," he added. "I answer the questions that I get asked. I get asked about Seattle far more — other than days like today — than I get asked about Quebec City. "But were not ready to expand." Earlier, when Bettman was asked for his views on work starting on a new arena in Las Vegas, the commissioner said it was good news for Las Vegas and the people who visit it. "Beyond that we havent made any plans. We, as I repeatedly have said, have received expressions of interest from people who might want to own a franchise in Las Vegas — as we have from a number of other cities — but were not involved in any expansion process."   Im not too pleased about because of how I was serving

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - American John Isner made short work of his third-round match Wednesday in the Winston-Salem Open, beating Kazakhstans Mikhail Kukushkin 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Isner, the tournaments top seed and two-time champion, served 17 aces and needed just 68 minutes to oust the 13th-seeded Kukushkin in the final tuneup for next weeks U.S. Open. "It couldve gone a lot quicker," said Isner, who was born in nearby Greensboro, N.C. "I made it tough on myself, which Im not too pleased about because of how I was serving. Still, I played well at the end of the match and Im off in straight sets again, which is nice." The 6-foot-10 Isner broke Kukushkins serve twice and won nearly three-quarters of all points played in the first set, which he completed in just 18 minutes. However, Isner had a tougher time in the second set. While he served 12 aces, he also struggled to finish points against the smaller Kukushkin. "I was putting a lot of pressure on him, and doing the right things," Isner said. "But I got away from that a little bit. Of course, he changed his tactics up, and certainly played better in the second set. It got away from me there a little bit, but I played well at the end." Isner, 12-0 all-time in the tournament, will face seventh-seeded Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in Thursdays semifinals. Rosol advanced with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over 10th-seeded Pedro Andujar of Spain. Also advancing to the quarterfinals were American Sam Querrey, fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, Belgian qualifier David Goffin, Polands Jerzy Janowicz, ninth-seeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan and 14th-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy. Querrey will play Garcia-Lopez in one quarterfinal match at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. The other pairings have Goffin facing Janowicz and Lu taking on Seppi. In earlier matches, Garcia-Lopez battled through a third-set tiebreaker before beating 11th-seeded Donald Young of the U.S. 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Garcia-Lopez overcame a 6-4 deficit in the third tiebreaker by winning four consecutive points to advance to an ATP tournament quarterfinal for the sixth time this year. "The last month in Europe on the clay courts, I was losing a lot of tiebreakers," said Garcia-Lopez, who won his third career ATP Tour title last April in Morocco. "But at the end today, I got lucky. Sometimes the tiebreaker is a lottery, and I got the number. Thats why I won." In other third-round matches, Querrey defeated second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; Goffin extended his winning streak to 25 consecutive matches by beating 15th-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-4, 4-6, 6-4; Janowicz downed 12th-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Lu beat No. 8 seed Marcel Gransllers of Spain 6-1, 6-2; and Seppi defeated Frances Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma wants his high-powered team to get used to playing tight-checking playoff hockey before the post-season begins next month. St. Louis doesnt need the lure of the playoffs as an excuse to get stingy. The space-eating Blues have been doing it all year, and it showed in a taut 1-0 road win on Sunday. Frustrating the NHLs best power play during a pivotal two-man disadvantage at the start of the second period, the Blues continued their mastery of the Eastern Conference by beating the Penguins the way theyve beaten so many teams this season. The room to manoeuvr that Pittsburgh stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin usually enjoy disappeared as St. Louis clogged passing lanes and dictated play defensively. David Backes deflected a slap shot by Alexander Steen past Marc-Andre Fleury midway through the third period for the games only goal and Brian Elliott stopped 33 shots to pick up his fourth shutout of the season as the Blues moved three points clear of Chicago in the race for the best record in the Western Conference. "When youre in a tight game like that against a good team, the guys kind of rose up to the challenge and I tried to make a couple saves and get the rebounds out of the zone and they did the rest," Elliott said. Fleury made 26 saves for the Penguins but watched Backes deflection carom off his glove and into the net just after a penalty against Malkin expired. "I just saw the guy raise his stick for the shot," Fleury said. "There were a bunch of people in front. I tried to cover some net but I didnt see it go in. St. Louis bounced back from a one-sided loss at Philadelphia on Saturday to improve the leagues best road record to 23-11-3. Pittsburghs top-ranked power play went 0-for-5 a day after scoring three times in a win over Tampa Bay. When Elliott wasnt getting a pad on the puck, his teammates were. The Blues blocked 25 shots, with the Penguins frustration growing at every turn as the Blues improved to 20-5-2 against the Eastern Conference, the best interconference record in the league. Pittsburgh had a 5-on-3 power play at the beginning of the second period for more than 90 seconds without being able to sneak something by Elliott. Most of the time the Penguins struggled generating a shot as the Blues effectively disrupted Pittsburghs rhythm. "We just kind of cleared lanes and I was able to see the ones they took," Elliott said. "Whenever guys are moving big guys out of the way, it just helps and you saw guys get in front of shots, block them and clear them down." Malkin was called for high-sticking 9:17 into the third and he was barely out of the box and back on the ice when Backes gave St. Louis the lead. The puck cycled to the point and Alexander Steen fired a slap shot that Backes found a way to nick as it sailed by. His 24th goal of the year proved more than enough. Elliott wobbled several times — including at least two saves where it appeared the puck was creeping to the goal line when the whistle blew — but didnt collapse. When the clock expired after one last clear up the zone, the game ended with the unusual sight of Malkin trying to mix it up with Alex Pietrangelo. Bylsma said coming into an important weekend he wanted his team to get used to playing tightly contested, low-scoring games. Pittsburgh survived one on Saturday, rallying for a 4-3 overtime win against the streaking Lightning that featured 40 minutes of clamp-down hockey and 22 minutes of frantic play. The Blues, who have positioned themselves into contenders in the West by sealing off the net, would not be lulled into the kind of end-to-end stretches that allow the Penguins to run free. "We still want to do a better job in these games and win them," Crosby said. "We have done a pretty good job of being patient when weve been in these kinds of games." At times, Bylsma wonders if his club was too patient, particularly in the first period. "The first 20 minutes we backed them off with speed," he said. "We had some opportunities and needed to have more of a drive and shoot mentality." NOTES: The Penguins played with seven defencemen instead of six, a move Bylsma said was needed in a game where he knew open ice would be at a premium. ... As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. St. Pierre, who had been eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 15, played 14 regular-season games for the Stamps in 2013, seeing action on both special teams and as a blocker at fullback. He recorded eight special-teams tackles and scored his first CFL touchdown on July 20 at home against Montreal. He also played in the Western Final. "Tim is a hard-working player who has been a great asset to us on special teams since joining us three years ago and who has done a great job of making the transition to fullback," said head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. "He is a consummate professional and I am pleased that he chosen to continue his career in Calgary."t; St.ddddddddddddPierre first joined the Red and White in 2011 and converted to the offensive side of the ball after spending three seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos as a linebacker, long-snapper and special teams standout. He was Edmontons nominee for the Special Teams Player of the Year award in 2010. In six CFL seasons, he has registered 51 special-teams tackles, 14 defensive tackles and two catches for 14 yards and a touchdown. "Re-signing was a pretty easy decision, especially since everyone seems to be on the same page and so many players have already signed contracts to come back," said St. Pierre, a 27-year-old native of Hamilton, Ont. "This is a good group of guys and Im looking forward to another season. This is year seven for me but Im just as excited as I was for year one." ' ' '

six assists in 55 games this season but is more known

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens shored up their back end by acquiring veteran defenceman Mike Weaver from the Florida Panthers for a fifth-round pick in the 2015 draft. Weaver, 35, has six assists in 55 games this season but is more known for his defensive prowess. In the past, Weaver has been considered something of a specialist against Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. "If I stay out of the paper, Im doing my job," he said jokingly, as quoted by the Canadiens official website. "Im not a guy whos going to score a lot of points but I do the little things like block shots and penalty killing is my specialty. Id rather block a shot than score a goal so I guess you could say Im a goalies best friend back there." As the Panthers make moves for next season and beyond, general manager Dale Tallon was more than willing to give Weaver a shot to go to the Canadiens. "Were just looking to the future. Montreal was in need of a solid defensive defenceman, and we felt that it was a good thing for Mike Weaver to get into the playoff picture and have a good opportunity to win with Montreal," Tallon said on a conference call Tuesday night. "Hes a great warrior, played his rear end off for us every night, blocked, shots, killed penalties, so I wish him well." Weaver has played in 585 career NHL games with the Panthers, Atlanta Thrashers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues. This is the first time he has been traded. Its the second year in a row the Habs went for defensive depth at the blue-line. They traded a fifth-rounder last year to the Kings for Davis Drewiskie, who played nine games for Montreal to finish out the 2013 season. Weaver is in the final season of a US$2.2-million, two-year deal. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent July 1. Jose de Jesus Corona Jersey . INDIANAPOLIS -- After Philadelphias latest loss gave the 76ers their longest skid in franchise history, coach Brett Brown insisted he doesnt dwell on the streak. Lance Stephenson scored 25 points and the Indiana Pacers rallied from an early deficit to beat Philadelphia 99-90 on Monday night, handing the 76ers their 21st straight loss. "Its hard because of a competitive thing, but in relation to worrying about a record, we dont live in that world," Brown said. "I dont bring that to that locker room once. I dont mention it to them, I dont think about it often -- (but) you cant help but be aware of it." Philadelphia eclipsed its previous mark of 20 straight losses during the 1972-73 season, when it finished 9-73. The Sixers tied the Detroit Pistons for the sixth-longest losing streak in NBA history. The Pistons lost 21 straight bridging the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons. The Cleveland Cavaliers set the NBA record for consecutive losses with 26, in the 2010-11 season. "We move on. Were on a different path right now," Brown said. "We started this season with a plan, we took it to a whole other level to reconfirm our plan on trade deadline night." Paul George had 24 points for the Pacers, who staked the Sixers to a 15-6 lead before taking the lead and pulling away. George Hill scored 11 points, Ian Mahinmi had 10 and David West grabbed 12 rebounds. Thaddeus Young had 23 points to lead the Sixers, who havent won since Jan. 29 at Boston. Evan Turner, now with the Pacers, hit the game-winning shot in that 95-94 win by Philadelphia. Turner, traded to Indiana with Lavoy Allen on Feb. 20 for Danny Granger and a draft pick, had four points and seven rebounds against his former team on Monday. Hollis Thompson and Tony Wroten each scored 17, Michael Carter-Williams had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Henry Sims had nine points and 11 rebounds for the Sixers, who next host Chicago on Wednesday night. Philadelphia built its 15-6 first-quarter lead by shooting 6 for 9 from the field, including 3 for 4 on 3-pointers, while the Pacers were 3 for 9 in the same stretch. "(These teams) are the ones that pose the biggest threat, because for us, weve got to get motivated," Indianas Paul George said. "All these games are huge for us because every game counts." But Indiana closed the quarter on a 15-9 run to pull to 24-21. Mahinmis rrebound and dunk off a miss by Luis Scola miss gave the Pacers a 27-26 lead with 9:50 to play in the second quarter, their first lead since 2-0.dddddddddddd The second quarter saw seven lead changes and seven ties, the last on a jumper by Carter-Williams that tied the score at 48 with 2:11 to play. Hill hit a 3-pointer to put Indiana up 51-48, George dunked, then hit a free throw after a technical on Byron Mullens for kicking the ball after he fouled Stephenson. Stephenson hit both free throws to give the Pacers a 56-48 lead. Indiana led 58-50 at halftime. But the Pacers, who shot 13 for 21 in the second quarter, went cold in the third. Indiana was just 6 of 27 from the floor in the third, giving Philadelphia a chance. "It was a tough game. We just didnt have a whole lot of pop," Indianas David West said. "They came out in the third quarter with more energy." Young pulled the Sixers to 62-61 on a 3-pointer, then put them ahead 63-62 on a fadeaway jumper. West hit a free throw to tie the game, but a lane violation wiped out his second attempt. Mahinmi broke the tie with two free throws with 3:39 to play in the third. Indianas lead was 67-65 when George and Hill hit consecutive 3-pointers to extend the lead to eight. Young scored to make it 73-67, but West put back a miss by Hill to take a 75-67 lead into the fourth quarter. The Sixers closed to 88-85, but Carter-Williams missed a potential tying 3-pointer with 2:15 remaining. Hill answered on the other end with a 3-pointer to give Indiana a 91-85 lead with 1:56 to play. Hill then stole Carter-Williams pass and Roy Hibbert completed a three-point play at the other end for a 94-85 advantage. "We were there," Brown said. "I think its a great example and learning lesson for Michael Carter-Williams, leaving the corner, George Hill hits a 3, its a 3-point game." NOTES: Pacers C Andrew Bynum (knee) sat out the game and is day-to-day. Pacers coach Frank Vogel said Bynum had an MRI on Monday. "Well know more in the next couple of days," Vogel said before the game. Bynum has played in just two games since the Pacers signed him on Feb. 1. ... The Pacers were also without backup PG C.J. Watson (hamstring). ... James Anderson (thigh) did not travel with the Sixers after suffering a thigh bruise in Saturdays loss to Memphis. He had been the only Sixer to appear in every game this season. ' ' '

Rafael Nadal has been knocked out of the Miami Open, after being forced to retire from his second round match against little-known Bosnian Damir Dzumhur. After slipping 3-0 behind in the deciding set, Nadal required medical treatment before deciding to call it a day after 109 minutes on court. The Spaniard said he started feeling dizzy towards the end of the first set and later withdrew claiming he was too scared to continue. However, the No 5 seed appeared to be cruising during the early stages of the contest as he raced through the opening set, which he took 6-2 in just 44 minutes.Dzumhur, who was broken twice during the set, did not help his own cause by sending down five double faults while the 29-year-old from Mallorca conceded just five points from his four service games. But everything was to change dramatically after that, with Nadal losing his serve twice during the second set which his 23-year-old opponent claimed 6-4 in temperatures close to 90 degrees. And after Nadal had suffered two more breaks early in the decider, and slipped 15-30 down in game four, the 14-time Grand Slam champion disconsolately shook hands with the delighted Dzumhur.   The only general manager the CFL club has had since it
Posted by: Dogcat250 - 08-20-2019, 07:18 AM - Forum: Applications - No Replies

MONTREAL -- Speculation on Jim Popps future with the Montreal Alouettes has been put to rest, at least for now. The only general manager the CFL club has had since it returned to Montreal after a 10-year hiatus in 1996 signed a three-year contract extension on Thursday that runs through the 2017 season. There was concern that the 49-year-old, who was in the final year of his contract, was ready to move on. But the Elkin, N.C. native said: "I plan to be here and fulfil my contract." He did not say if his deal includes an out-clause if he is offered an NFL job. He drew interest ahead of last season from the Indianapolis Colts and rumours of a move south have arisen periodically throughout his tenure with the Alouettes. Its assumed Popp would jump at the chance, but he said hed be just as happy to stay in Montreal until he retires. "I cant foresee the future," said the married father of six children, all born in Montreal. "I have to work. "I dont know if Ill ever retire, with six kids. But I love the job, the city and the team, so if it happens that way, youll find a very happy person. I dont dwell on whether (an NFL job) will ever happen. I know Im very fortunate to have a job. Theres really only two pro football leagues and there are 41 jobs. I have one of those." Popp was GM of the defunct Baltimore Stallions for two years, winning a Grey Cup in 1995, before the team moved to Montreal. He is 233-129-1 as a CFL general manager, adding Cups with the Alouettes in 2002, 2009 and 2010. In Montreal, his teams have never missed the playoffs and never won fewer than eight games in a season. But it looked like his stay was coming to an end last winter when owner Robert Wetenhall did not let him keep the head coaching job, left him out of the decision to hire Tom Higgins as coach and did not immediately extend his contract as GM. Popp took over as head coach for the third time in his career when Dan Hawkins was fired only five games into the 2013 season. He is 14-18 in the regular season as a coach. If there was any bitterness about not being allowed to coach, Popp said he is over it. "I have no hard feelings about anything," said Popp, who is also vice-president and director of football operations. "Its business. Its (Wetenhalls) team. "He makes the decisions. It was a real roller-coaster in the off-season, especially for me personally with different things that went on, but I knew the entire time that I might not be the head coach. I also want to make it very clear that my relationship with Tom Higgins is very good." Team president Mark Weightman said Wetenhall did not attend the news conference because he was ill. Weightman hopes the move will end talk of a rift among management. "For us, there wasnt a lot of doubt that it would play out this way," he said. "I understand how perception wasnt always that clear, so to have this done early, if it silences the critics or closes the door on that conversation, great. "We can focus on the season and winning some games. Having Jim secured for many more years is a big part of ensuring the stability of our club." Popp said that talks on his contract extension lasted only a week. "There was never any doubt or worries from my end that those discussions would take place," he said. Yeezy Nederland . Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Twice in the games final seconds, the 49ers were within inches of victory. But Michael Crabtree rolled out-of-bounds inside the 1-yard line and Colin Kaepernick fumbled on the goal line, as the St. Louis Rams went into Levis Stadium and stunned San Francisco, 13-10, in an NFC West showdown. Greg Zuerlein put the Rams (3-5) in front with a field goal midway through the fourth. After both teams were forced to punt, San Franciscos offense, which hadnt done anything in the second half until then, marched into scoring position with time winding down. Kaepernick started the final drive with a 25-yard pitch-and-catch to Stevie Johnson, who made a defender miss before running to the Niners 37. A penalty on Lamarcus Joyner gave the 49ers another first down out of the two-minute warning. Later in the drive, Crabtree drew two straight penalties -- a pass interference and defensive holding -- on Trumaine Johnson to set up 1st-and- goal for the Niners with 42 seconds left. Kaepernick rolled right and hit Crabtree near the goal line on first down, but he had to go to the ground to make the catch and rolled out-of-bounds inches before the goal line. A booth review confirmed the call. Kaepernicks second down pass sailed out of the back of the end zone, and the ball popped free on his QB sneak on third down. James Laurinaitis recovered the fumble on the bottom of the pile, sealing the outcome. Danny Ings Jersey .
